Head Over Heels ©1993 Gene Operle (BMI)
All my friends say I’m just a fool; fallin’ for her silly schemes
But they’re not wearin’ these shoes that I’m wearin’
They’re not dreamin’ my dreams
She’s out for herself; I know it; She’s got me on a shelf; I know it
But one thing will never change
I’m head over heels in love with this lady
Spinnin’ my wheels; they go round and round
I’m head over heels in love with this lady
Maybe someday, she’ll come around
Makin’ believe; it’s gonna be easy
But it won’t be easy at all
She can go her way, I know that someday
Her heart will answer this lover’s call
She’s out for herself; I know it; She’s got me on a shelf; I know it
But one thing will never change
I’m head over heels in love with this lady
Spinnin’ my wheels; they go round and round
I’m head over heels in love with this lady
Maybe someday, she’ll come around
And my wait will be over (she’ll come around)
And finally, I’ll get to hold her
I’m head over heels in love with this lady
Spinnin’ my wheels; they go round and round
I’m head over heels in love with this lady
Maybe someday, she’ll come around
Let Her Go ©2005 Gene Operle (BMI)
Lift the rug, open the door-----shake it off, sweep the floor
Face the music, take it in----breathe it out, learn to dance again
Let her go, let her go
My friend, I’ve been down that same road----it’s commonly known as denial
Her words, you refuse to accept----like dirt, they’ve been swept to the pile
Hidden under the welcome mat, you can’t keep on living like that
Lift the rug, open the door-----shake it off, sweep the floor
Face the music, take it in----breathe it out, learn to dance again
Let her go, let her go
You know, it was not meant to be----so now you are free to move on
I know, you’ll get through this somehow----you’re better off now that she’s
gone
This looks like a good time and place to go out and take back your space
Lift the rug, open the door-----shake it off, sweep the floor
Face the music, take it in----breathe it out, learn to dance again
Let her go, let her go
It’s Over Now, For Sure © 2006 Gene Operle (BMI)
You don’t have to worry ‘bout me comin’ ‘round
You don’t have to wonder where I’ve been or where I’m bound
You don’t have to act like, you love me anymore
You don’t have to pretend, it’s over now for sure
For once and for all; I’m leavin’ you behind
For good and for the better; I’ve made up my mind
Forget about forever; this love will not endure
For giving up, for giving in; it’s over now for sure
It’s over now for sure; is there no turnin’ back?
Have our hearts locked the door?
Is there reason to unpack once more?
As threads come unraveled, we both have to mend
As bridges burn behind us, we won’t cross this way again
As far as love’s concerned; we have no future
As long as love’s behind us, it’s over now for sure
Its over now for sure; is there no turnin’ back?
Have our hearts locked the door?
Is there reason to unpack once more?
If that’s the way it is, then
You don’t have to worry ‘bout me comin’ ‘round
You don’t have to wonder where I’ve been or where I’m bound
It Ain’t No Secret, I Love You © 2005 Gene Operle (BMI)
When I get up each mornin’ and head back to that ole grind
I think about where I’d be now; nowhere, ‘less it’s behind
Without you, you-----it’s you, I do confess
You are the best-kept secret to my success
It ain’t no secret----Honey, it ain’t no secret
It ain’t no secret----I love you
Now, you can ‘vestigate me if you don’t believe it’s so
There’s plenty of testimony; I tell everyone I know
That it’s you, you-------It’s you, and don’t ever doubt
If you say that you’re not in, then honey, I want out
It ain’t no secret----Honey, it ain’t no secret
It ain’t no secret----I love you
Some say, it might not last forever; I say it positively must
Whatever happens to me honey; For your love, I’ll adjust
‘Cause it’s you, you----to you, I give my life
There’s an oak-tree valentine, I carved with my knife (repeat chorus)
It ain’t no secret----Honey, it ain’t no secret
It ain’t no secret----I love you
For What It’s Worth © 2005 Gene Operle (BMI)
For what it’s worth; I love you more than I could possibly describe
For what it’s worth; what I live for, is to be here, by your side
As far as my love goes; I promise you all of my tomorrows
For what it’s worth; take this ring as a symbol for all time
For what it’s worth; no ending, no ending love, by God’s design
For whatever will be; amidst the joys and sorrows, you will find me
If I could put a price on what you’ve brought to the table
Surely, I could speculate, but I would not be able to appraise
My heart can hardly count the ways, you’ve touched it true
And yet, all I have for you
For what it’s worth; I give you me ‘til this life comes to an end
For what it’s worth, I guarantee, I’ll be your best friend
Of the treasures on this earth
The best that I can give to you, for what it’s worth
Is all my love (all my love) ---all my love (all my love)
For what it’s worth-------for what it’s worth
Was It Something I Said? © 2005 Gene Operle (BMI)
This is one of those times when I just have to admit, I can be such a fool
So insensitive, inconsiderate, and as stubborn as a mule
It feels like we’re coming apart as we lie together in this bed?
Was it something I said----------or didn’t say?
I’d like to know before we end this day
Was it something I did-------------or didn’t do?
I can’t read your mind, and I don’t have a clue
Let’s get to the bottom of this, once and for all
If we’re going down, let’s go back to the place where we fall
In love, instead------Was it something I said?
I know I’m not a saint; but, you’re as close as I’ll get to ever holding one
All too often I get under your skin, left to wonder what I’ve done
So I don’t have to second-guess, just tell me the thoughts inside your head
Was it something I said----------or didn’t say?
I’d like to know before we end this day
Was it something I did-------------or didn’t do?
I can’t read your mind, and I don’t have a clue
Let’s get to the bottom of this, once and for all
If we’re going down, let’s go back to the place where we fall
In love, instead------Was it something I said?
You’ve got my attention; what do you want me to hear?
Grant my redemption let not another tear be shed
Tell me, was it something I said? Was it something I said?
Tell me honey; Was it something I said?
If Only ©2006 Gene Operle (BMI)
We say things that we don’t mean; now and then, somebody gets hurt
We may brush it off or lay it aside, raid the closet for another clean shirt
Do we sweep up the crumbs and let them be gone
Or leave them for a bare-footed pride to keep steppin’ on
If only I could take back the angry words spoken
If only they’d stumbled on the tip of my tongue
If only I’d thought it out a little bit longer
If only I’d been a little less high-strung
If only we could make amends----get back to bein’ friends
There are some things, I would defend to the point of losin’ it all
Before I make a fist and start throwin’ punches
Lord, just save me from another bad fall
Into the trap of thinkin’ I’m always right
You know a weak man’s pride puts up a mighty strong fight
If only I could take back the angry words spoken
If only they’d stumbled on the tip of my tongue
If only I’d thought it out a little bit long
If only I’d been a little less high-strung
If only we could make amends----get back to bein’ friends
Let Him Be Clay ©2006 Gene Operle (BMI)
I couldn’t find comfort in that middle seat
So I resigned the thought of getting’ some rest
Conversation with the lady in twenty-one D
Led to fam’ly and how much we’d been blest
I mentioned my concern ‘bout our middle child
His plans of goin’ out on his own
How the lure of the bright lights, the stage and big cities
Wouldn’t leave that boy alone
The man in twenty-one F, who I thought had been sleepin’
Said he couldn’t help, but overhear
Said, “it’s really hard to let them go
When all you wanna do is hold ‘em near”
He smiled at the lady and spoke of their son
How nothin’ could get him to stay
He said, “We let him be clay beneath the Good Lord’s Fingers”
“To be centered on a wheel inside the Potter’s Hands”
“As he went his way, we put our trust in the Master’s Plans”
“We continued to pray and let him be clay”
I asked the lady if she’d like to sit next to husband
She thanked me, but politely said “no”
“The aisle seat is better, if I have to get up
And he likes to look out the window”
She said, “I don’t mean to preach, so, I’m beggin’ your pardon
For our comments on your affairs
Have faith in your son and yourself too, but mostly in the Man upstairs”
I said, “I probably won’t get him to change his mind
Though he may not have a clue,
As to what lies ahead, ‘cause what fills his head
His heart believes he can do”
She said, “You’ve done your best to raise him right
I’m sure, it’ll all turn out OK”
“Just let him be clay beneath the Good Lord’s Fingers”
“To be centered on a wheel inside the Potter’s Hands”
“He’ll find his way; you can trust in the Master’s Plans,
Continue to pray and let him be clay”
As we departed, they wished me the best and gave me their bus’ness card
Turns out, they are potters and their company goes by CCC Bernard
I asked them what the triple C’s stood for
She answered as we walked the jetway
Clarise and Charlie, and Clayton, our son, but, he just goes by Clay
“So; we let him be Clay beneath the Good Lord’s Fingers”
“He was centered on a wheel inside the Potter’s Hands”
“Sons find their way’ you can trust in the Master’s Plans”
“Continue to pray and let him be clay; let him be clay”
Don’t Even Go There © 2005 Gene Operle (BMI)
In front of family, friends, and God, they made a pledge
But “to love” wouldn’t always be easy
‘Cause life would take their love to the edge
Then one day, she would ask, if she was the right woman for him
If he was happy with the choice he made----he stopped her to say
“Don’t even go there---honey, let’s not even go there
That’s one road; I’m not goin’ down with you
Honey, I don’t have all the answers
But, there’s one thing you can be sure of
We don’t have to go there, ‘cause I’ll always be here with you”
After the doctor had left her room, he took her hand
Said, “I know life hasn’t always been easy, forty years lovin’ your man
More than once, I was lost, too stubborn to ask for directions
Another man might have given you more
She whispered, “I’ve never felt poor, so”
“Don’t even go there---honey, let’s not even go there
That’s one road; I’m not goin’ down with you
Honey, I don’t have all the answers
But, there’s one thing you can be sure of
We don’t have to go there, ‘cause I’ll always be here”
With you, as long as the Lord intends
With you, honey, ‘til this road ends”
And he said
“Don’t even go there---honey, let’s not even go there
That’s one road, I’m not goin’ down with you
Honey, I don’t have all the answers
But, there’s one thing you can be sure of
We don’t have to go there, ‘cause I’ll always be here with you”
How To Survive ©2005 Gene Operle (BMI)
He sits in her chair, in the room; he just stares
At figurines on the mantle and her book on the floor
The radio static and sounds from the attic
Are loyal companions to this lonely décor
He prays, it’s a bad dream, but wakes to the chill
He’s come home without her, and she never will, and he cries
“God, I don’t mean to be bitter---you should have taken me with her”
Like the house in the sand, where the two of them loved
Lies a shell of a man, whose heart is giving up
Their love never ended; it was buried alive
Now, he’s dying to know how to survive
A cross hangs above their bed quilted with love
Pillows filled with an emptiness that sleep can’t ignore
As the mirror reflects, the curtain protects
A darkness that never existed before
Like the clothes in her closet, he’s just hangin’ on
To a fragrance that lingers as if she’s not gone, and he cries
“God, I don’t mean to be bitter---you should have taken me with her”
Like the house in the sand, where the two of them loved
Lies a shell of a man, whose heart is giving up
Their love never ended; it was buried alive
Now, he’s dying to know how to survive
He trips on one of her shoes, she left in the hall
He throws one at the living room wall
Their love never ended; it was buried alive
Now, he’s dying to know----he’s dying to know
He’s dying to know how to survive
Here Lately ©1998 Gene Operle (BMI)
Here lately; I don’t even want to get out of bed
Here lately; what if thoughts are cloudin’ my head
I’ve had about all of the free advice that I can stand
And if the sun would show its face, it’d be appreciated greatly
There ain’t been no trace; here lately
Here lately; I can’t seem to get inspired
Here lately; I’m hardly anything, but tired
But there’s light at the end of this tunnel, I know
And if the sun would show its face, it’d be appreciated greatly
There ain’t been no trace, here lately
Seems these blues ain’t in a hurry, but Lord, I wish they’d let me go
No need to worry; I’ve got ‘em under control
They’re temporary, they ain’t getting’ my soul
Seems these blues ain’t in a hurry, but Lord, I wish they’d let me go
No need to worry; I’ve got ‘em under control
They’re temporary, they ain’t getting’ my soul
Here lately; I second-guess the choices I’ve made
Here lately; I wrestle with the prices I’ve paid
I’ve started to wonder if it’s all worthwhile
And if the sun would show its face, it’d be appreciated greatly
There ain’t been no trace, here lately
Enough Already ©2005 Gene Operle (BMI)
After a long and sleepless night, my pickup’s battery was dead
I shivered from the winter’s bite and thought, “I should have stayed in bed”
Thanks to a friend who came through with his cables and saved the day
But, I was comin’ down with the flu and I cursed as he drove away
‘Cause, I’d had enough for one day, Lord knows; enough for one year
And I had started to wonder if He’d even hear my call
Or where He’d been through it all
I said, “Lord, send out your angels to even the score
I’ve had my share of misfortune, and then maybe more,
Take it from me; I’ve had enough already”
Radio weatherman reports---the storm left ruins in its path
Your generosity supports those who got caught up in its wrath
Predictions of more to come, surely must be a mistake
Destruction has left them numb---just how much more can they take?
“Cause they’ve had enough for one day, Lord, enough for one year
They must have started to wonder if you’d even hear their call
Or where you’d been through it all
I said, “Lord, send out you angels to even the score
They’ve had their share of misfortune, and then, maybe more
Take it from me; they’ve had enough already”
Then, I started to deliberate a long-overdue change in state of mind
When I heard the correspondent say, “They can’t wait another day,
It’s a race, a race against time”
As widespread famine and disease and desperation take their toll
We switch channels on our TV’s from starving children, we don’t know
Lord, I’m sorry for the curse; now I can see my troubles pale
There are those who have it worse, while my blessing tip the scale
‘Cause I’ve had enough for on day, Lord, enough for one year
And now, I don’t have to wonder if you even hear my call
You’ve been there through it all
I’ll try to be one of your angels to even the score
I’ve had my share of good fortune and then, maybe more
Take it from me; I’ve had enough already; yes, I know
I ain’t got it so rough, I ain’t got it so rough, all I’ve got is enough
Enough already------Enough already
Since I Met You ©1993 Gene Operle (BMI)
Since I met you; days are never lonely
Since I met you; you’re my one and only
Since I met you; the only thing I think about it you
You make me feel like a million dollars
You make me feel; I’m on the top of the world
You make me feel; I don’t have to worry
That’s the way you make me feel
Oh, all I gotta do is think about you when things aren’t goin’ right
Bet my bottom dollar, I’ll be feelin’ better, 'long about seven tonight
Since I met you, the only thing that matters
Since I met you is that you feel the same
Since I met you; the only thing I think about is you
"For What It's Worth" is somewhat of a concept album. The songs are in chronological
order and loosely follow what could be a man's journey through life.
